The ultimate handheld shmup, R-Type DX was originally developed by Brits Studios Ltd® in 1999 for the Game Boy® Color, after successfully porting R-Type and R-Type II to Game Boy®, where both titles were launched to great critical acclaim.
R-Type DX electrified the golden age of handheld gaming, not only featuring full versions of R-Type and R-Type II, updated to take advantage of the Game Boy Color’s improved specifications, but in addition, the game features ‘R-Type DX Mode’, an exclusive, continuous campaign that seamlessly merged both titles into a single, cohesive experience, with on-the-fly battery saves.
The physical release of R-Type DX, packs five distinct game modes:
R-Type (Classic Monochrome): The original 1991 Game Boy port, fully playable on original Game Boy and Game Boy Color hardware.
R-Type II (Classic Monochrome): The 1992 Game Boy sequel port, fully playable on original Game Boy and Game Boy Color hardware.
R-Type (Color-Enhanced): Remastered edition featuring full color palettes, updated animations, and redrawn sprites. Playable on Game Boy Color only.
R-Type II (Color-Enhanced): Remastered edition enhanced for Game Boy Color displays and improved clarity. Playable on Game Boy Color only.
R-Type DX Mode: An exclusive, continuous campaign that seamlessly merges both R-Type and R-Type II into a single, cohesive progression with on-the-fly checkpoint battery saves. Playable on Game Boy Color only.
Being released on a special ‘Cosmic Cartridge’ and compatible with Game Boy and Game Boy Color (see above for game compatibility) hardware, Limited Run Games continues to champion physical media with this incredible collector release. Included with the physical cartridge, R-Type DX is presented in deluxe numbered hard-cover packaging featuring the work of renowned Anime artist Paul “Otaking” Johnson, and comes complete with a full-color instruction manual, just like games used to feature!
In addition to the physical release of the game, Limited Run Games proudly continues their partnerships with both Irem and City Connection through their music publishing arm, ClariceDisc, and is today excited to announce the R-Type DX Original Soundtrack, being released on both CD and vinyl LP.
Composed by WASi303 (Masato Ishizaki) and Masahiko Ishida, with original Game Boy audio arranged by David Whittaker, the physical audio releases contain 33 total tracks, combining 19 arranged tracks from R-TYPE DX: Music Encore (remixed by WASi303 / Tetsuro Sato) and 14 original Game Boy BGM tracks. Features include:
CD Soundtrack: Includes a full-color booklet featuring an exclusive cover artwork by Paul "Otaking" Johnson and an exclusive interview with producer Nobuhiro Yoshikawa.
Vinyl LP Soundtrack: 12" LP featuring Side A (R-TYPE DX: Music Encore) and Side B (Original BGM). Available in Cosmic Vinyl, housed in a collector gatefold jacket with the producer interview insert.
